Clarke Murphy always finding new Horizons

Clarke Murphy Print in Chatswood, Sydney, is a company that prides itself on keeping up with the times – and when it comes to Horizon finishing equipment, Currie Group is happy to provide the latest gear to meet its needs.

It’s easy to see Clarke Murphy’s high opinion of Horizon equipment when you look at the collators, folders, stitchliners and other machines in the printer’s stable. The newest acquisition, a BQ-480 perfect binder, is the first of its kind to be installed in NSW, and replaces the company’s old BQ-470. “We tend to change Horizon machines every five or six years, just so we’re staying up with their latest advances in electronics,” explained Ken Murphy, managing director. “My son saw the new machine at PacPrint, and there’s some very nice features on it compared to the old one.”

Clarke Murphy produces both digital and offset jobs for the pharmaceutical, alcohol and finance sectors, among others, including both small and wide format point-of-sale displays. “I would call ourselves a boutique printing company,” Murphy said.

The speed and quality on the BQ-480 make it a great fit for Clarke Murphy, says Bernie Robinson, managing director of Currie Group. “The biggest advantage with the BQ-480 is that its setup time is 50 percent quicker than the old machine, so you can do a one on one job with virtually no setup time,” he said. “The side glue unit is now separate, which allows the operator to do finer adjustments. It also has different scoring wheels in it for scoring spine and flaps, which makes it much easier for the operator, and gives sharper scoring on the cover as well.”

The company has been a Currie Group customer for many years; aside from its Horizon equipment, Clarke Murphy’s digital department also houses two HP Indigo digital presses: a 5500 and a 7500. “As Clarke Murphy has grown, Currie Group has grown with them. Our relationship with them has been very good over the years. We think they’re a great company and we love dealing with them,” Robinson said.

“We’re generally very satisfied with Currie Group,” said Murphy. “They stand by their products, and their service levels are very good. Absolutely no complaints.”

Murphy adds that Kevin Dyras, Clarke Murphy’s long-time Currie sales rep, will soon return to the UK, and wishes him all the best. “He’s been an excellent sales rep who’s looked after us for years and years. We’ll miss him,” he said.
