Lou Pannunzio was a stranger to the printing industry before taking over the Ringwood Kwik Kopy franchise in 2001. Eight years on and it is a decision he has never looked back on.

The 47-year-old Melbourne man’s business was awarded Franchise of the Year at Kwik Kopy’s annual conference in Hamilton Island this month. Pannunzio could not believe the news.

“I was absolutely ecstatic and honoured to be even nominated amongst such an elite group of people,” he said.

In addition, the franchise also came first in production efficiency for 2006-07 and production efficiency for 2007-08.

Pannunzio, who has spent his working life in sales, got fed up with “disposable relationships” and wanted to develop an ongoing association with clients. Joining a franchise environment seemed like the right solution.

“If you enjoy interacting with others and can build relationships then the world is your oyster,” he said. “I knew that I could make a good living by joining a franchise and this award is proof that I have succeeded.”

Starting with a team of three – all of whom are still part of the business today – Kwik Kopy, Ringwood has experienced continued growth, which Pannunzio maintains has not been affected by the current economic climate.

“Being a part of a franchise system offers an enormous amount of benefits, especially if things aren’t going well,” Pannunzio said. “I would not like to be an independent in these trying times.”

A self-proclaimed lover and devotee to the printing industry, Pannunzio has no intentions of leaving. Three years into the job, he decided that he would continue running his franchise until retirement.

“My only real regret is that I didn’t do it 20 years ago,” Pannunzio said. “This industry is always evolving and there is incredible growth that will occur.”
