‘Part of a big family’: Peter Wagener, All Flags (right) with two other EFI customers and Frank Mallozzi, EFI (left) on stage at Connect 2018.

A long-time customer of EFI’s inkjet solutions, Peter Wagener of All Flags made the long trip out from Perth to attend Connect and to give his feedback at a customer panel. He has no doubt he’ll be back next year, telling Print21‘s Jake Nelson it was well worth the trip.

I meet Peter Wagener just outside Connect’s main hall at the Wynn, having last seen him at his Perth office in August. When I ask how his first Connect has gone, Wagener tells me he couldn’t be happier with the experience. “It’s been great, in a word. It’s titled Connect, and that’s exactly what happened – it sort of feels like you’re part of a big family,” he said.

Wagener had been invited by EFI to come and speak on a panel with other customers from the USA and Mexico, offering his feedback as an experienced user of EFI inkjet and software solutions on the three new VUTEk machines he installed last year. “I’d been intending to come for quite a few years, and EFI asked me to come along and give some feedback on the EFI machines we installed recently. My main interests aside from that were to meet some other users and members of the EFI team, and find out what EFI was planning in the future,” he said.

As Wagener already has a huge stable of EFI products, there was only one he was interested in purchasing as a result of the conference: the new MarketDirect software suite. “Literally every piece of equipment they had on the exhibition floor, we’ve already got,” he said. “The new software solves a problem that we currently have with trying to get eDMs out in a cost-effective manner.”

Though he wouldn’t necessarily recommend it for smaller companies, Wagener says Connect is a great experience, one that he plans to repeat next year. “It is a significant commitment due to the cost and time involved, but you don’t get to be among peers in our industry very often,” he said.

With Australia’s industry being very segmented, and not much communication between competitors, Wagener says speaking to other printers with whom he’ll never compete is an appealing feature Connect offers. “In this sort of environment you’re talking to people from other parts of the world, and you can assist each other and bounce ideas off each other.

“It’s invaluable – that’s how you learn,” he said.
