Most of the products are software systems, but there is a fine tradition of small Australian manufacturing being carried on. Independent and unafraid to have a go the Chinchens from Coogee, NSW, Mark and son Jay of Hyphen, brought their Arakis direct to canvas inkjet engine to IPEX 2006 and caused quite a stir.

Mark (pictured on left with a prospective distributor) says he has manufacturers lined up in a number of European countries including Spain, Switzerland and Poland, eager to take on the innovative product. It uses an Epson inkjet, but the clever parts are in the product delivery and presentation.

Leading the clever software charge, Rohan Holt continues to make good progress with his groundbreaking workflow system, Metrix. This allows printers to gang up similar jobs on the same printing plate delivering maximum efficiency and profit.

A surprise discovery at the show was PrintSoft, a business of Australia Post specialising in high-speed variable data composition technology. The IPEX representation was by the company’s German office. The Australian-developed system has over 5,500 installations in over 50 countries.

Also seen was Adstream now promoting Quickcut adstream, following the takeover earlier this year of the pioneering data distribution and verification Australian company. While still an Australian product with the company having majority shareholding by Telstra, the Adstream people shifted the headquarters from Sydney to London just before IPEX.

Finally Heros Delanchian (on right) and Les Hardy were kept busy on the stand of their UK distributor promoting the Australian-developed InTelmail mail solution. These integrated systems for complex mail processing applications are indicative of the high level of development of the local mail fulfilment market.

Nice to see local entrepreneurs stepping out into the international arena.
