There is little change in the regular and premium airmail and seamail rates–but the 24 per cent discount “Economy Air” service has gone and so has the “Print Post Direct Bag International” (aka the M-bag). I looked for them on the Australia Post site and there is nothing I could find on them either.

Both services were a boon to small publishers. Given that Print Post Direct was $4.75/kg and our “Type & Layout” (243x177mm x 176 pages, soft cover) runs three to the kilogram, maintaining a modest export trade in Australian printed books was not a problem.

Ordinary seamail for parcels is $7/kg–that’s nearly a 50 per cent increase and a considerable hit when your business is marginal at best.

With the loss of the M-bag and Economy Air back-up there seems to be no alternative but to send the printing off-shore to the major client countries.

Not what we want to do but …

Cheers, Geoff
