Participants will be guided to reduced operating costs through good environmental management. Printing Industriesis working collaboratively with the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) on this pilot certification project as part of its new Environmental Action project, providing practical guidance and info on environmental management.

The initiative is is an opportunity for companies to get assistance with issues that will directly benefit their business by reducing the risks of compliance, hazards and negative publicity, and by realising opportunities.

The association is also trying to identify commonalities that could be included in the certification scheme. This four-tiered scheme is based on Printing Industries Environment Principles (PIEP) and will operate similar to the “Green Stamp” program established in 2001 by Printing Industries AW and the State Government. It will be a voluntary, self-regulated scheme focussing on several key areas considered essential to reducing the environmental impact of the printing industry.

The objectives of the PIEP are:

  • provide a step-up approach to environmental management;
  • improve the environmental scorecard and performance of the industry
  • enable customers and stakeholders to distinguish between the environmental performance of printers
  • to generate competition within the industry to achieve higher levels of environmental performance, especially over international competitors.

    As a first step, a small group of printers will be selected to work with DEC to reduce their environmental impacts and demonstrate the business benefits of good environmental management. These include being able to:

  • cut costs (by reducing energy, water and waste)
  • improve reputation
  • make you a “supplier of choice”
  • improve employee satisfaction, retention and productivity.

    If you have a commitment to the environment and want your business involved in the direction and guidance of the reference group, promptly contact Adin Coup at Printing Industrieson 1800 227 425 or (02) 8789 7300 to discuss the opportunities to align your business for environmental sustainability.

    The close off date for Expressions of Interest is 4 December 2006.
