Mergers and acquisitions are a defining feature of the printing industry, especially in New Zealand. While the growth of very large enterprises brings new opportunities for investment in new technologies, it also creates new forms of business relationships, confederations of companies that are ostensibly competitors. The danger is that too much concentration will stifle real competition. Important to remember that transparency is an essential element of a functioning market.

Printing has a long tradition of owner operators in small- to medium-sized businesses. Under the impetus of consolidation we may be witnessing the end of an era.
