The term ‘3d printing’ is a multi-million dollar free PR gift to the printing industry. While the actual process of accretive manufacturing – to give it a more accurate title – has little or nothing to do with putting marks on paper, in the popular mind printers are now the keepers of the secrets of what President Barack Obama described as the “21st century industrial revolution.” So far 3d printing is operating in vertical markets such as dentistry, not in ‘3D Print for Pay.’ But that may change, if the printing industry grasps the value of its free kick.
