The ACCC’s decision not to review the competitive aspects of the IVE/Franklin/AIW takeover must surely clear the way for PMP’s takeover of IPMG. The two deals are very different from the New Zealand experience of Fairfax buying NZME, which was knocked back by the NZCC. In NZ the question goes to the heart of news and the freedom of the press; in Australia it’s really a question of economics and the utility of press equipment in the face of major competition.

The proposed Australian takeovers are, on the whole, good for the long-term sustainability of the industry.
