Blind faith in globalisation and neoliberal values has seen the destruction of local industries. The best argument for lowering trade barriers is to cut costs to consumers while helping to promote development around the world. However, the effect is most often the increased concentration of production in developed countries at the cost of local manufacturing.

The Liberal Government’s obsession with the market and free trade is a dangerously unbalanced approach to policy. By all means loosen import regulations where appropriate, but not because of some belief in the miraculous cure of globalisation – and not at the cost of efficient industries such as Australian book printing.
