No matter how commercially imperative it may be, there is a cost in terms of people’s jobs when efficiencies are sought through merging companies. The reported 300 people to lose their jobs in the PMP/IPMG merger are relatively lucky. They’ll get all their entitlements and likely a decent redundancy payout; these are large responsible printing enterprises that’ll do the right thing.

But to be let go in mid-stream is still an unsettling and unwelcome disruption in life. With few vacancies elsewhere the printing industry will lose valuable skill and experience.
