As another mailing house hits the wall it’s too easy to be fatalistic about the decline in letter writing. Sure, people are no longer writing to one another, at least not in the numbers they once were. But we live in a world that is almost defined by marketing and advertising. When was the last time you were encouraged to make someone feel special – write them a letter? Or, they’ll know you care when you write them a letter?

If Australia Post was an owner-operated business like most printers and mailing houses, it’d be working hard to stem the decline in its core business. It would attempt to make letter writing popular again. It would have a go at protecting its business.

It’s about time we pushed back.
