Issue 989 – March 7, 2018

A cluster of closures this week spotlights the precarious position of many mid-size printing companies. In searching for a common thread as to why now, I believe the importance of cash flow following the long holiday season cannot be overlooked. When the crunch hits six weeks later it’s often enough to take down companies that have depleted their reserves and are running on the smell of the proverbial oily rag.

These are not necessarily badly run companies, it just that times are hard for printers that have grown too big to downsize but not big enough to survive.  And for many more in the same situation, times are going to get even tougher … unless they change course. Reshaping your business model is better than standing like a rabbit in the headlights.
