The ‘gift’ comes as a result of decisions taken by FujiFilm as co-owner of UK Fuji Hunt, not to compete against its own products, following its takeover of DS Chemport earlier in May this year. The agency was transferred between the two companies in full cooperation with the main concern being the welfare of customers and staff.

According to Markus Haefeli, managing director of Ferag Australia, the agency provides another element of its total prepress solutions. He has set up a special division within the company under Fritz Kistler, recently arrived from Switzerland, to “give the business the respect and focus it deserves. This is a very good agency for us and fits in very well with our strategy to penetrate the sheetfed market.”

Ferag Australia has transformed itself from a high-end mailroom and bindery equipment supplier to a prepress and consumables company with an estimated turnover of $21 million in the sector. Commencing the year with the acquisition of the Hostmann-Steinberg ink agency from CPI, it has since introduced Lüscher CTP equipment and sold the first one to Kingswood Press in Brisbane. According to Haefeli another unit is currently going into a large sheetfed printer in Melbourne with others in Sydney and Melbourne to follow.

“As a supplier we don’t have a large range of agencies but those we do have we concentrate on and give them our best,” he said. The decision of the Australian company to enter the prepress and consumables market is intriguing the Swiss parent company and, according to Haefeli, there is a likelihood of it emulating the local success in other markets.

The only gap in the Ferag range is a printing plate, but industry sources expect a major announcement in this area shortly.

Meanwhile DS Chemport has no intention of replacing the Konica agency with another. According to Graham McKenzie, managing director, it is back to doing what the company does best – manufacturing and selling chemicals. He claims sales have doubled in an major increase of market share since he came on board due to investment in better production equipment and a wider range of products.
