The NSW Printing Industry Craftsmanship Awards (PICAs) have returned as part of Printing Industries’ new pathway to the National Print Awards, and were held last night at Old Government House in Parramatta.

Digitalpress was the big winner on the night, taking home 14 medals, including four gold. One of these gold medals went to a very special project: the Katrina and Tori Memorial Commemorative Book, commissioned by the NSW Government to commemorate the lives of the victims of the Martin Place siege. According to Theo Pettaras, managing director, the book was one of the most important print jobs Digitalpress had ever produced. “It was highly sensitive, because of the content in it – we were commemorating a tragic event, and it had to be treated with great respect and dignity. We wanted to produce something beautiful for the families,” he said.

Momento Pro picked up the coveted Ball and Doggett Judges’ Award for Omar + Suzi’s Wedding Celebration, while Digitalpress’s Teneo Book won Highly Commended.

Andrew Macaulay, CEO PIAA.

Andrew Macaulay, CEO of Printing Industries, hailed the return of the NSW PICAs after several years as a return to an ‘approachable’ entry path to the NPAs, with gold-medal winners from each PICA night going on to represent their state on the national stage. “It celebrates print across Australia, celebrates the value chain, and celebrates creativity,” he said.

The PICAs were moved from Sydney’s CBD to Parramatta, in the western suburbs, due to member feedback and lower venue costs. “Members asked us to hold them out here where they live, where industry is, where they can come from work, where it’s approachable,” said Macaulay.

The South Australian PICAs will be held next Monday in Adelaide, and Victoria’s will follow shortly after in Melbourne on Wednesday.
