Murphy takes new role at The Newspaper Works

Former Fairfax Media executive, Mitchell Murphy, will take on the role of executive director of publishing at The Newspaper Works from September this year.

Murphy (pictured) was appointed to the newly created role in early August, with his new role to kick off on 3 September. He most recently worked as publisher of Fairfax Media New Zealand broadsheet newspaper, The Sunday Star-Times and the Auckland Now website.

Murphy’s new role will deal with the merging of The Newspaper Works and the Pacific Area Newspaper Publishers Association (PANPA). Mr Murphy will undertake roles previously overseen by PANPA including organising the Newspaper of the Year Awards and overseeing publications The PANPA Bulletin and e-zine News Now.

The Newspaper Works says he will also be responsible for representing the newspaper industry and developing strong relationships with all industry partners.

“Mitchell brings great breadth and depth of experience in all areas of newspaper publishing – from regional and metropolitan newspapers, to print and digital as well as editorial and commercial aspects,” says Tony Hale, The Newspaper Works chief executive.

Murphy says he is “delighted to be joining The Newspaper Works and playing an active role in passionately championing the media industry. I look forward to working closely with the board and the dedicated team at The Newspaper Works to enhance the services currently offered to the organisation’s loyal membership base.”

Murphy’s previous roles include editor-in-chief and circulation director at the Illawarra Mercury, and group editor-in-chief of Fairfax Community Newspapers in NSW and Victoria.

He will commence his new role on 3 September to coincide with the 2012 PANPA Future Forum on 6 and 7 September at the Sydney Convention Centre.
