The identity and motives of the arsonist who torched Michael Smith’s business in Sydney over the weekend  are unknown. Police are investigating the break-in and fire at the premises of the former TLC trade bindery less than three months after it was bought out of receivership.

Perfectly Bound owner, Michael Smith said someone broke into the building in Slough Business Park, Silverwater around 3am on Sunday, 10 May and attempted to set fire to the premises. “The efforts were foiled by the raising of automatic alarms and alertness of nearby 24/7 businesses,” he said.  “Although a small fire was commenced, the automated sprinkling system was able to extinguish it before damage to major equipment or office facilities. The sprinkler system operated only in a limited zone, as required, thereby minimising water damage.”

Smith said he did not want to imply that any of his direct competitors were involved in the incident. “We have great mutual respect for many of the established providers in the market occasionally assisting each other in various ways with equipment and supplies.”

But he added that he was “dismayed at the obvious attempt to disrupt our business at this crucial time as we gain momentum in our new laminating and varnishing sector.  We are pleased that our clean work practices and new site facilities worked extremely well in protecting equipment and clients’ work. Most of our IT is cloud based or has off-site redundancy as part of our business continuity plan.”

The business should resume normal operations tomorrow, said Smith. “We expect some minor disruption to work as we tidy-up but expect to be operating near full production by Wednesday afternoon.”

NSW police have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to contact them.  In a statement, police described the fire as ‘suspicious’:

Investigations are continuing into a suspicious fire at Silverwater. Emergency services were called to Slough Street about 4am on Sunday (10 May 2015), where they found a printing business alight. The blaze was extinguished. No one was injured and the building sustained minor damage. Officers from Flemington Local Area Command attended and established a crime scene. The fire is believed to be deliberately lit and police are investigating. Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Perfectly Bound moved in to the premises in Silverwater earlier this year, bringing to an end the drawn out liquidation saga of the previous occupants.
