Screen Holdings Co., Ltd. has been selected as one of the Top 100 Global Innovators for 2023 by Clarivate, the Anglo-American science and technology analysis organisation. Based on Clarivate’s analysis of patent data, Screen has been recognised as one of the world’s most innovative companies or institutions. This is the second time Screen has received this award, following its win in 2022.

Clarivate creates its list of the top 100 global innovators from patent data it possesses as one of the world’s leading information services companies. To compile this list, it analyses and evaluates trends in intellectual property (IP) for companies and institutions in every country and region.

Screen is well know in graphic arts and label/packaging circles but is also a leading manufacturer of equipment used in the manufacture of silicon chips and wafers and is involved in life sciences and clean energy.

Clarivate identifies entities that have filed at least 500 patent applications since 2000 and that also have at least 100 inventions for which they have successfully registered patents in the preceding five years. In the second step, Clarivate assesses each of these inventions and assigns scores based on four main factors: influence, success, globalization and technical distinctiveness.

Screen has continuously sought to create and develop new products and businesses based on three core areas of technology it has fostered over many decades, namely surface processing, direct imaging and image processing. It is also currently devising an IP strategy, including an IP portfolio strategy, that incorporates a composite analysis of both in-house and external IP information.

The IP strategy will join the company’s existing management, business and technology strategies. Screen expects the new approach will enhance its ability to build a business portfolio that reflects market trends in various areas from diverse perspectives.

Going forward, Screen intends to continue working as a “solution creator” that can generate new value for society. It is fully committed to undertaking research and development designed to resolve various issues faced by society and to further strengthening its IP initiatives intended to support these activities. The company’s core goal remains, as always, to contribute to the realisation of a sustainable society.

Screen has reported strong financial results the past few years and is a member of the elite NIKKEI 225 companies that comprise the main Japanese sharemarket index.

Screen GP Australia managing director Peter Scott says: “This is excellent recognition for Screen as a company. Many of the disciplines in our company’s high-technology success are spin-offs from print and graphic arts – Photo-Lithography of thin films used to make silicon wafers for example. The Clarivate Top 100 position is a great honour and I’m proud to be working for such an innovative company that also pursues sustainable goals.”
