PERFECT PACKAGING FROM BLUE STAR
Blue Star Constellation claimed the Pride In Print Awards Paper and Board Packaging Category for its “stunning” production of 1839 Honey Cartons.
Blue Star Constellation account manager Kyle Murphy said given 1839’s positioning in the market, his company needed to produce “superior-quality packaging, that has the premium edge over competitors”.
“We were presented with standing artwork files and a design aesthetic, and were able to suggest a few print production changes that has given it a better environmental footprint,” he said.
“The hexagonal pattern at the top of the carton was printed with a UV gloss, which we moved away from, and produced a similar result using an in-line aqueous coating that is water-based and environmentally-friendly.
“Teamwork and knowledge between prepress and the printer helped achieve the tones while maintaining the quality print and alignment of intricate foiling.”
Murphy said additional, functional elements were also incorporated. “The design of the carton incorporates gusseted dust flaps that don’t reveal raw edges on the top three panels, while the inside print gives the buyer a nice reveal once the packaging is opened and the product has been taken out," he said.
The judges’ comments said, “A nice and clean print, embellishing and finishing job, this carton has been well executed in every aspect. It features beautiful fine detail in the foiling and embossing to really enhance the honeycomb imagery. The diecutting and creasing are excellent, as is the double fold on the tuck flap showing no signs of stress, and everything lines up perfectly. Judges could find no issues with it at all, it is a stunning job.”
The client, 1839, was glowing in its praise. “We have tried to position our UMF 15+ in the premium part of the Manuka honey market so it’s been important for us to develop our packaging accordingly,” said a spokesman. “High-grade Manuka honey is often given as a gift, so it really does need to be special. We have tried to incorporate various elements that allow the gift box to stand out on shelf visually, and texturally be a little different.”
