Canon Australia has made its fourth acquisition in four years, buying New Zealand Post Group’s managed services and outsourcing company Converga for an undisclosed sum.

Converga has over 1,300 staff based in offices and technology centres throughout Australia, New Zealand, United States and the Philippines. The move boosts Canon’s standing as a key player in business process outsourcing, IT managed services, digitisation and forms automation and print management.

“Converga is a fantastic company that we see growing and complementing our group long into the future,” said Yusuke Mizoguchi, MD Canon Oceania. “Our vision is to be recognised for customer-focused solutions and market leading technology and services."

In a statement, Canon said Converga would remain a standalone business, retaining its management team and its independence, while benefiting from Canon’s investment, brand, leadership and product suite.

“The acquisition of Converga enables us to expand our capability in managed service and business process outsourcing, strengthening our end-to-end offering to our customers,” said Craig Manson, director, Canon Business Services. “Together Canon, Converga and Harbour IT can now offer market leading business process as a service capability, enabling our customers to achieve more.”

The acquisition of Converga is Canon’s fourth in four years. Canon took a majority stake of Harbour IT last year and previously purchased Sun Studios and Oce Australia.

Brian Roche, CEO of New Zealand Post Group, says NZ Post would focus on its parcels, mail and financial services businesses in New Zealand. “Converga’s strategic fit within the Group was reassessed and we indicated we were looking to sell the company earlier this year,” said Roche.

“For Converga’s staff, customers and suppliers, it will be business as usual. We anticipate a smooth transition of ownership to Canon Australia,” said Roche. New Zealand Post said it would continue to work closely with Converga as a client of its document and business management services.
