Digital package deal for print giant

Heidelberg expands its digital print packaging portfolio with a takeover of CSAT, Germany-based manufacturer of digital presses for the packaging market.

The deal widens Heidelberg’s offering into the areas of drop-on-demand inkjet (DoD). CSAT industrial digital printing systems are designed to be integrated into packaging production lines.

Andy Vels Jensen (pictured), managing director for Heidelberg Australia, says packaging is becoming a bigger part of its business in Australia and around the world. “It is too early to say what the impact of this deal will be in Australia, but it will help us get more business in packaging.

“A lot of commercial sheet-fed printers have always eyed packaging as a possibility. They are now getting more involved. The smart printers wanting to diversify, not only look at digital and packaging, but also a combination of the two for short runs.”

Supplying tailor-made digital print solutions for almost 25 years, CSAT's current dry toner technology portfolio features the DTS 1200 printing system. The pharmaceuticals industry uses it for printing blister packs and package inserts.

CSAT former owner, Hans Mathea, says the integration with the global Heidelberg Group allows it to tap new markets with its technology. He will stay on as managing director.

"With an international customer base and comprehensive expertise in digital printing for the packaging industry built up over many years, we have established a strong position in the pharmaceuticals industry,” he said.
