HP Indigo 5500 drives Clarke Murphy Print into digital printing
Installation of HP Indigo 5500 press allows family business, Clarke Murphy Print, to move into the digital sphere.
The 20-year-old Sydney company has a long tradition in offset printing but after visiting PacPrint four years ago, manager, Ken Murphy, was impressed by the Indigo presses on display and began to think about the opportunities that this could open up for his business.
According to Murphy, who hails from a dynasty of printers, the decision to extend into a digital arm was a long process that first involved installing prepress and CtP. “Once I was confident that we had the prepress working nicely it gave us a springboard for rounding the company off with digital,” he said.

Murphy shopped around and inspected a range of digital presses on the market but eventually he chose the HP Indigo 5500 from The Currie Group. “The definitive factor for us was the machine’s quality,” he explained. In addition, he also purchased a Horizon BQ-470 EVA & PUR perfect binding machine; HT-30 Automatic single knife trimmer and AFC-566F fully automatic 6-buckle plates suction fed folder with MKU-54T mobile knife unit.
“This portfolio of products means that we can offer a full service to our existing client base and explore new sales opportunities,” he said.
Jason Beckley, HP Indigo product specialist at the Currie Group, believes that Clarke Murphy Print will benefit greatly from the 5500 press installed last month. “Going digital is the way forward,” he said. “The team at Clarke Murphy Print have taken a leap of faith in the product and produced some great work.”
Since installing the press, Murphy is happy with the results so far. “It is an investment in our future,” he said.
