Victoria’s Chisholm Institute of TAFE is launching new courses in Printing and Graphic Arts as part of a government-funded Back to Work project.

The first of the programs is a Vinyl Wrapping course for vehicles, where students will prove competency to obtain a certificate of attainment. The course is designed for those wishing to enter the industry and those seeking to upskill. The first of these 3-day ‘very practical’ courses will run on three consecutive Mondays, beginning November 7 and November 28.

The second program, due to begin in February 2017, will be open for school leavers in the coming months. Chisholm has developed a Certificate ll in Printing and Graphic Arts, with an emphasis on large format printing on to self-adhesive vinyl products and related media.

The program will be delivered full time over six months or part time over two years. The part-time model will allow students and employers to negotiate a Traineeship pathway.

Project manager Ernest Gal, a large format specialist who previously worked with The Image Box and Australian Visual Solutions, says the certificate provides an alternative to printing apprenticeships. “The certificate will focus on large format, basic display and illustrator skills and is aimed at students reluctant to commit to a three-year apprenticeship because they think it’s too long,” says Gal.

Chisholm is working towards becoming a market leader with training in this field, and as the merging of various disciplines within the rapidly evolving print industry gathers momentum, re-skilling the workforce is high on every business agenda.

Chisholm offers a total of over 500 courses across seven locations in Melbourne’s south east.
