The Australian edition of Rolling Stone magazine has stopped publication after 46 years following the collapse of its publisher Paper Riot, which went into liquidation last week.
Sydney-based Paper Riot was founded by Rolling Stone Australia editor Matthew Coyte in 2013 to take over the title from former publisher Bauer Media.
Cotye did not rule out the possibility that the local rock and roll bible – printed by Blue Star, a division of IVE Group - could be picked up by another publisher.
“The license has reverted back to the owner, Rolling Stone International,” Coyte told Mumbrella. “I can’t tell you what their plans are moving forward or make any further comment.”
Jann Wenner, founder of the US-based parent, last year sold his majority stake in the business to Penske Media, publisher of Variety and IndieWire. The magazine’s Indonesian title was closed at the beginning of this year. The Emma print report for November 2017 estimated Rolling Stone Australia had an annual issue readership of 230,000.
The founder of the Australian edition, Phillip Fraser, wrote this week about launching the publication 46 years ago in 1972.
We all believed, with varying levels of conviction, that rock ‘n’ roll was an expression of an emerging youth culture that would change the world.
Joint liquidators David Solomons and Antony Resnick have asked creditors to produce formal proofs of debt by 15 February.
